You are right, sigh. I started xemacs -vanilla and could
load comint.elc.

(K)ubuntu (and Debian) have the annoying custom of sharing
files between GNU emacs and Xemacs (most likely to "save"
resources). That for example happens with ispell and causes
more problems than benefits. I bet here it is similar, so I
have to search for the culprit. Or better I do what you and
others have recommended for some time, switch to 21.5 :-D.
