Interesting. I thought I knew the XEmacs regex syntax pretty well. Live and learn... Anyway, all that's in the tramp buffer is

[p15254 at repo ~]$ [p15254 at repo ~]$ 

Doesn't seem like much to go on. FWIW, the contents of the tramp debug buffer are

# Opening connection at repo using scp...
# Waiting for prompts from remote shell
# Waiting 60s for prompt from remote shell
# Found remote shell prompt.
# Initializing remote shell
$ unset HISTORY
[p15254 at repo ~]$ [p15254 at repo ~]$ [[Regexp `\(^[^#$%>
]*[#$%>] *\|^[^#$%>]*[#$%>] *\)\'' not found in 60 secs]]
