I still can't cleanly "just use it".  I go through this series of steps
after XEmacs starts:

    * Try ediff-revision (the most common thing I do)
    * Get an error about this 'state' variable being undefined
    * (setq debug-on-error t)
    * Try again
    * find-function whatever-it-is
    * C-x C-e

Then I'm off to the races.  I've cvs up'd and reinstalled the packages a
couple times but I still get this error.
