bug executing function from command line

It seems that XEmacs does not initialize properly when a function (-f)
or a lisp form (-eval) is given on the command line. For example if I
run "xemacs -q -f vm" I get significantly different behavior than if I
run "xemacs -q" and then type "M-x vm". In the first case, when I hit
"m" to send a mail message the vm gets messed up (the summary and
current message are refreshed on top of the left button bar). In the
latter case everything works properly.
Is there a way to work around this and still have vm start from the
command line?
Thanks,
jp
