I don't need to.  What you describe is the way redisplay is designed
to work.

If you have a patch I haven't tried, I'll try it.  Otherwise, I'm
aware of the problem, I've tried a number of quick fixes, they do not
work satisfactorily, and I'll get back to work on this when I have
time.  I don't know anyone else who is working on Xft at the moment;
that is the best I can offer.
