smtpmail, starttls and gmail

There was a thread on this on emacs-devel last week or so.  gnutls and gmail
don't get along.  Seems to be a bug in gmail IIRC (I'm not able to connect to my
archives to check, try Savannah's or gmane's archives of emacs-devel).
