Well, in theory they're only supposed to be sharing source files for
third party libraries, which is no different from what happens with
stuff you get from emacswiki, etc.

Problems generally occur when there are differences of opinion about
whether a library is a third-party library.  (There have been cases
where a library is in GNU Emacs, in an XEmacs package, and also the
bleeding edge version is independently developed and distributed in
Debian.)  AFAICT the Debian maintainers of such packages rarely do
"due diligence" to ensure compatibility with all the Emacsen
distributed by Debian.  Instead they make sure their preferred
platform is well supported, and depend on upstream efforts for
compatibility.  But if upstream were always doing such a great job,
there would be no need for Debian. :-)
