Perhaps I was too harsh. I just tried M-x hg-status and I get an error
right away. But if I run hg-status from a buffer that is in an hg repo,
then it creates a Mercurial status buffer.

I was expecting the buffer to behave a little like pcl-cvs or git (which
says it's mostly compatible with pcl-cvs). Perhaps my expectations are
wrong. I guess I basically don't know how to drive it, and there's not
much documentation in mercurial.el about how to use it. Or maybe the
version I have is too old. There's a copyright from 2006.
