So a guess would be that what I am seeing is a bug introduced in libpng
between version 1.2.22 and 1.2.27?

Could it be some subtle endian-related thing, or is that of no
consequence here? (My machine is a Mac Mini with a Powerpc processor).

Wasn't that fixed in 1.2.22?

Yeah, that sounds most likely.

As far as I can see, I have the newest libpng installed, from
libpng.org's frontpage:

 "The current public release, libpng 1.2.28, is identical to its
  two-day-old predecessor except for the configure-related build
  scripts,"

The "two-day-old predecessor" is 1.2.27, which is the version I have
installed as far as the Debian package system tells me.
