How to determine what face is associated with a bit of text?

Ooh, cool.  Just what I needed.  That gave me the insight to determine that
it's ansi-color doing the actual face manipulation, translating escape
sequences on-the-fly.  Looks like Giacomo's suggesting about -colors LightBG
is the way to fix this.
