That's damning with faint praise in my book (I've been spoiled by using
Teamware for the last 15+ years :-)).

Yes, an excellent suggestion.  I'll want to think about how to manage
the patches (i.e., use Mercurial Queues or not), but Mercurial in some
form is definitely the way to go.  (I'm using Mercurial in my day job
and am pretty comfortable with it.)
