[PATCH] fix corruption of ~/.emacs when trying to migrate an init file XEmacs can't fully load

Mike did some work on this, I believe it should be fixed in CVS.
Specifically, the old init file is now backed up.

I suppose we could add this patch too.  But it's probably not good
enough by itself, there are other paths to the same unfortunate result.
