No, thanks for your help.

Meanwhile I copied a dired-package from elsewere to
make `dired' running, which was successful so far.

Probably 

cvs -d :pserver:cvs at cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs checkout packages

was the command I should employ...
