s/originally not well-/never/
s/ as part of a package//

No, there can't be. As long as XEmacs continues to distribute an
outdated AUCTeX as part of their Sumo tarball, any such RPM package
from the AUCTeX project would conflict with the XEmacs RPM package.

You have to use the XEmacs package manager for deinstalling the
outdated AUCTeX and installing an up-to-date AUCTeX, and you have to
repeat the process after any RPM update.

I have yet to see any such "unconfirmed report", and there have been
no such reports upstream from users of the package. In fact, the
standard response to people reporting problems with the AUCTeX package
XEmacs chooses to distribute is to tell them about the upstream XEmacs
package from the AUCTeX project, and the standard reaction to that is
"thanks, worked like a charm" and one rarely hears anything more from
them, except when they make feature suggestions or problem reports not
related to XEmacs.

I think you are confusing problem reports of package users with
problems of making the package fit the _build_ policies of XEmacs
packages in your CVS tree. But I have seen nothing indicating any
activity in this area for at least half a year.
