Just install the XEmacs package
<URL:http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/auctex/auctex-11.84-pkg.tar.gz> for
AUCTeX <URL:http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex> from AUCTeX's download
site.  It contains preview-latex.  Because of "quality control
policies", the XEmacs team chooses to rather distribute an utterly
outdated and buggy AUCTeX package in their Sumo tarball.  Once you
uninstall that (using the XEmacs package manager) and install the
package provided by the AUCTeX team, you should be fine.
