[Bug: 21.4.20] Killing a large number of characters in shell mode hangs xemacs

More data:

   On the consol it works.

   Using the cygwin X-server and remoting from a pc it works.

   Using humming-bird exceed 2007 and remoting from a pc it does not work. 


Your suggestions:

1) zmacs-regions-stays is nil. I've tried to set it true in the usual 
ways. It always remains nil???

2) My gdb failed to attach to the process. I've got version 4.18 of gdb 
that was built for 
    solaris 5.1. I've downloaded gdb 6.6, will build, and try that.

3) x-selection-strict-motif-ownership is true. Setting this to nil does 
not make
     any difference.
