I don't think this can be the issue for me - all my XEmacsen builds
are --with-mule. (Although I fear your utf-8 will not survive my
replying to this in a tty frame in a latin-1 locale...)

But in any case I'll check for similar issues, when I have time to
come back to this (in about a month from now).
