:-( . Can it be that your font-lock.el (in the XEmacs core lisp) is
corrupted? If you download it from:

http://cvs.xemacs.org/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/XEmacs/xemacs/lisp/font-lock.el?rev=1.31

and load it in your XEmacs, does that improve things?
