Perhaps an "--fhs-directories" configure option to improve conformance
would be a good idea, or maybe "--installation-style=linux-fhs". I
don't think we need or want FHS-conformance by default. XEmacs is
intended to be portable to Linux, of course, but this is the first
time I've heard of any difficulty in generating an FHS-conformant
installation with appropriate settings of directory options.

The last time FHS conformance came up, it was argued that much of the
nonconformance in the default configuration was deliberate. In
particular, the way that FHS spreads stuff across the whole system
conflicts with the preference of Mac OS X, Windows, and many /opt
users for an application hierarchy that is not unnecessarily wide and
deep and contains only that application's components. I suspect that
Mike Sperber will have rather strong opinions on proposed changes, so
please make an effort to get his review of any patch that changes
default behavior.

I bet you'll find this is related to autoconf changes, eh?
