Neither do I!  It is possible to patch configure itself, but describing the
location is rather complex, which is why I recommend using the earlier
version.

I think that we're stuck with it for the medium term, since none of the
alternatives that I've seen are significantly better.

BTW, there are changes necessary for the next version of autoconf.  See my
latest submission to -patches for details.
