[Bug: 21.4.19] dired does not work properly anymore

No, it's not Dired, it's `insert-directory' that does it.  But only as
of 21.5, and I'm reasonably sure the patch hasn't been applied to
21.4.  That's why doing it in 21.4 is not a good idea.
