I've confirmed that I get a build and I can run Xft XEmacs in the X
Window System now that I've applied the patch that restored that
function.

I'm still uneasy about the general idea for the reasons stated (I
really don't understand the implications for lots of use cases yet),
but I have to admit that I perceive startup of this build to be faster
than the last one.
