One other thing to check/try...do you have an entry for your system in
your hosts file? If not, it may be trying a DNS lookup and failing.
Note: I have not tried this (I already have an entry in my hosts file
for my system.)
You might try something like:
127.0.0.1 myhostname localhost localhosts.my.domain
I'm a FreeBSD user and don't use Linux, so I don't know for sure how it
handles this, but it might have changes between versions.
