Aidan, thank you very much for investigating this and for the patches!
I haven't tried them yet, but I will do that this week.

BTW, maybe you will find this interesting/useful: some time ago I
stumbled upon a function called KeySymToUcs4 in xfree86 4.5.0 sources in
file imConv.c. I am sure it should be there in x.org too. I think that
this function is not externally visible, but it looks quite useful for
all applications that have to map X KeySym to Unicode.
