Bug in display

I am working on Fedora 5, xemacs-21.5.27 on the Gtk desktop

./configure --prefix=/sw/xemacs-21.5.27 --with-xft
--with-xft=emacs,tabs,menubars,gauges --without-debug
--without-error-checking --with-gtk

This is a demonstration of a bug which creates unnecessary lines.
Refreshing the screen using ^L (C-l runs `recenter') removes the lines.

I have attached 3 small gifs (1.gif, 2.gif and 3.gif) to show the
problem graphically. 1.gif shows text in a buffer. 2.gif shows that the
text has been marked. 3.gif is the result after pressing the delete (BS
runs `delete-backward-char' button).
