[Bug: 21.4.19] Gnus crashes when preparing summary buffer

Dear Bug Team!
Sometimes Gnus crashes as soon as I select a newsgroup in the *group*
buffer. Usually I can enter the summary buffer without any problems,
but this crash has happened several times now. This may be because I
have added a function to gnus-summary-prepare-hook to get rid of the
log buffers resulting from gnus' compilation of newsrc.eld:
