Aidan wrote the code directly implicated in the crash.  In general,
Ben is the obvious person to ask.

What little I know suggests that just putting a sane console in there
should do the trick.  I'll be submitting an Info node on the subject
of writing new consoles in a few minutes, but it doesn't bear on this
question, I'm afraid.  (Mostly it documents my inability to do so for
Xft.:-)
