I’ve written a patch based on Mike Fabian’s suggestion (that is, dynamically
assign unknown Unicode code points on encountering them to a Mule character
set created ad-hoc), and have been running with it locally for months. I
haven’t integrated it, partly because Ben has been stating that he’ll get to
great things, and partly because it’s buggy in the escape-quoted
auto-save-file case. (The mapping from unknown code points to Mule character
codes is not stable from one invocation to the next.)
