I don't know about this error, but I know that your package index does _not_ get 
updated if you have the error

Instead, the locally installed package index is copied to ~/.xemacs/.
Your type error might be a follow-up error.

In your situation, I would try to update EFS manually and see if the error still 
occurs. Fetch efs-1.33-pkg.tar.gz from the XEmacs package download, and unpack 
it in /usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/. Restart XEmacs, and try to update 
the package index again. Maybe that helps.
